How to count your no contact days
Your streak starts from the last real contact: a text, a call, a reply, a like on a story, a “happy birthday.” It does not start from the breakup conversation if you kept talking afterward. Be honest with the date. A counter you cheat is a counter you will stop trusting.
Receiving a message does not reset your count. Replying does. If you have to answer something practical, like returning keys, keep it to one factual line and go back to silence. Read the full no contact rule if you want the reasoning behind each of these lines.
What each milestone means
- Day 3The first 72 hours are the hardest. Cravings peak here.
- Day 7One week. Sleep and appetite often start to normalize.
- Day 14Two weeks. The urge to text is less constant, more like waves.
- Day 30One month. Most people report the first genuinely normal days.
- Day 66Research on habit formation puts the average new habit at about 66 days. Not checking is now your default.
- Day 90Three months. You can think about them without the spike. This is the version of you who made it.
Every milestone has its own page in the no contact timeline. For a day-by-day walkthrough of the first month, see No Contact Day by Day.
If you slip
Most people break no contact at least once. It is not a moral failure, it is a craving doing what cravings do. Reset the counter, notice what triggered it (late night, alcohol, a song, their name in a group chat), and remove one trigger before tomorrow. The streak you rebuild after a slip is usually the one that holds. Here is exactly what to do after breaking no contact.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I count no contact days?
- Start from the last time you texted, called, replied, or reached out on social media. Each full 24 hours after that is one day. This counter uses the calendar date you enter, so day 1 completes at the end of the first full day.
- Does looking at their profile break no contact?
- Strictly, no contact means no messages, calls, or reactions in either direction. Checking their profile does not reset your count, but it usually resets your feelings. Most people heal faster when they mute or unfollow as well.
- What if they text me first?
- Receiving a message does not break your streak. Replying does. If you feel you must respond to a practical matter, keep it short, factual, and free of emotion, then go back to silence.
- How long should no contact last?
- Most people commit to at least 30 days. Sixty to ninety days gives your attachment system real time to settle. If the relationship was abusive or with a narcissistic partner, indefinite no contact is the healthiest choice.
- Is this counter private?
- Yes. Your start date is saved only in your browser on this device. Nothing is sent to our servers and there is no account.
