Write an unsent letter to your ex
Say all of it. The angry part, the part that still loves them, the part you would never say out loud. Then release it. Nothing is sent, nothing is saved.

Why an unsent letter works when texting doesn't
When you want to text your ex at 1 a.m., what you actually want is to be heard. A text gives you a version of that, followed by hours of refreshing for a reply and a reset of every day you had built. An unsent letter gives you the being-heard part, because you finally say it fully, without the cost.
Psychologist James Pennebaker's work on expressive writing found that people who wrote honestly about a painful experience for a few short sessions tended to feel better in the weeks after, compared with people who wrote about neutral topics. The mechanism seems to be simple: putting feelings into words organizes them, and organized feelings are easier to carry.
What to write
- The thing you never got to say, in the exact words you would have used.
- What you are angry about. Do not soften it. Nobody is reading.
- What you genuinely miss. Naming it takes away its power to ambush you.
- What you are choosing to put down now, and what you are taking with you.
- A letter to the version of you who stayed too long. Be kind to them.

After you release it
Do not open the messaging app. The letter did the job the text was going to try to do. Drink some water, put your phone in another room, and if the urge is still loud, here is a ten-minute plan for the urge to text. Then add today to your no contact counter.
Frequently asked questions
- What is an unsent letter?
- An unsent letter is a letter you write to someone with no intention of sending it. You say the whole truth, the anger and the tenderness, and then you let it go. It is a classic tool in grief and breakup recovery because it gives the feelings a place to land that is not your ex's inbox.
- Does writing an unsent letter actually help?
- Research on expressive writing, pioneered by psychologist James Pennebaker, has repeatedly found that writing honestly about a painful experience for a few sessions is linked with better mood and even physical health over the following weeks. The point is not the letter, it is the processing.
- Should I ever send it?
- The whole power of an unsent letter is that it is unsent. The moment you write for an audience, you edit yourself. If, after a week, you still think a message is needed, write a new, short one with a clear purpose. Do not send the letter.
- Is anything saved?
- No. The text stays on this page until you release it, and then it is gone. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared. If you want to keep letters, use a private journal or the Unsent Letters feature in the Bloom app, which stores them only on your phone.
